How to Clean Foggy Headlights

Headlights

As winter approaches and the days get shorter, it’s more important than any other time of year to have clean headlights that shine a bright, clear beam. If your headlights are duller than usual, try out these tips for how to clean foggy headlights.

Toothpaste

The easiest DIY headlight cleaning method is toothpaste. Toothpaste is gritty and contains cleaning agents, so it easily wipes off the grime that’s developed on your headlight cover. Wipe the light down with soap and water first, then apply a small amount of toothpaste and wipe with a cloth.

Glass cleaner

You can also use glass cleaner and car polish. Tape off the area around your headlight to avoid damaging the paint job, then spray the headlight with glass cleaner and wipe it down. Then use another cloth to apply automotive polish, which buffs the surface of the headlight to remove oxidization.

Headlight restoration kit

If you’d prefer to use something designed for cleaning headlights to get the best finish possible, you can buy a headlight restoration kit. This will usually include sandpaper, polish, and a protective coating, so it may keep your headlights from oxidizing again longer than the other methods. Just make sure you follow the instructions on the kit to the letter, or it can do more harm than good.
