Spring is right around the corner. If you have a layer of salty grime on your car along with some trash, it’s time to spring clean your car.

Spring is right around the corner. This means it is time to kick winter to the curb, and the place where winter is most likely lingering the most is your car. If you have a layer of salty grime on your car along with some trash and a bunch of junk, it’s time to spring clean your car. Follow these five steps to have the best-looking car on the block.

  1. Empty your car. Take everything out of your car that isn’t attached—don’t forget the trunk. This includes floor mats and any cup holder liners. Divide all the stuff into three piles: things to throw away, things to put away, and things to put back in your car.
  2. Clean the interior. Work from the top down to clean every surface of your car. Use a fine-bristled brush, like an old toothbrush, to scrub at built-up dust and dirt. Wash the windows and wipe down all hard surfaces. Finally, vacuum the seats and carpeting.
  3. Wash car accessories. To clean your floor mats, you can just hose them down, even if they’re carpeted. Then, just hang them up to air dry. If you have cup holder inserts spray these down, too.
  4. Wash your car. Starting with your roof, wash one panel at a time, making sure you rinse out your cloth or sponge frequently. Rinse off the soap and dry the car with a soft, clean cloth.
  5. Put it back together. Once everything is clean and dry, put it back in your car. Make sure everything you want to keep in your car has its own place.
