Taking the family out for an all-American summer vacation this year? Here are the road trip essentials you need to have before setting out:
- A navigation app: Forget the unreliable old folding map in the dashboard. Be sure to download Google Maps or Waze to navigate with real-time traffic updates. And bring multiple phone chargers, just in case.
- Cooler with snacks: Don’t rely on gas station foods to power your family during the car ride. Pack a cooler with bottled water and healthy snacks, like fruits and veggies. Protein bars and mixed nuts are also good for filling empty stomachs.
- Books and games: Don’t let the whole family zone out with separate screens. Instead, bring books to read—perhaps you could all read the same book and have a discussion after each chapter. Alternatively, come with some easy games to play in the car, like handheld options such as Catchphrase or 20 Questions. You can also play classic road trip games like the Alphabet Game, I Spy, and Car Bingo.
- First-aid kit and cleaning supplies: Your car should already have a first-aid kit, but make sure it is easily accessible. Also pack cleaning supplies for small spills. A Tide-To-Go pen can work wonders for laundry stains.
