During the holiday season, many of us spend time gathering with friends and family for delicious holiday feasts. If you’ve been invited to bring a side dish or two to an upcoming dinner or get-together, be sure to use these tips for traveling with food to keep your food fresh and safe.
The unfriendly microorganisms that are responsible for food poisoning are just as possible at temperatures as low as 40 F as they are during warm summer days. Protect your cold dishes from this possibility by packing them into coolers or other insulated containers with plenty of ice packs.
Perhaps the surest way to travel with a dish meant to be served hot is to travel with it cold. Prepare your casseroles, your sweet potatoes, and your other warm side dishes the day before. If they require a long baking time, go ahead and bake them ahead of time as well, then let them cool completely. Pack these dishes in tightly with ice packs and bake or reheat them at your destination so that you can serve them warm and delicious.
If your drive is a bit shorter, or if you’re worried about oven space, you can also go ahead and bake your hot dish right before you leave, then pack it in an insulated carrier.

The holidays can be a difficult time for many people, especially those without family or support. There are many volunteer opportunities near Paducah, KY, that give those of us who are more privileged a chance to give back to the people in need during the season of giving.
Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center
The Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center is located right in Paducah, with a mission to protect and support families and individuals who need to escape from domestic violence. The 35-bed shelter takes volunteers to help with their many services, and to help repair and maintain the building itself.
Rebuilding Together Metropolis
Located in Metropolis, IL, the Rebuilding Together Metropolis program seeks to offer free home repair services to the homes of low-income families. Volunteers go to the homes of these families to provide the services. Having a secure and safe home could be the greatest holiday gift to a family, making this the perfect time of year to look into this charity’s volunteer opportunities.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tristate, Inc.
The Ronald McDonald House was founded in order to help improve the health of children, while providing support to them and their families. Volunteers can meet several needs, from being present and supportive to families, to cooking hot meals for those in the house, all of which make a huge difference to those struggling with challenges during the holiday season.
We hope that you’ll join the team at Chip Wynn Motors in working to make the holiday season bright for everyone in and around Paducah.
