How to Protect Your Car from COVID-19 and Other Germs

Clean And Sanitize Your Car

Keeping your car germ-free can be a challenge. Follow these tips to safely sanitize and protect your car from COVID-19 and other viruses, like the common cold and the flu:

Germ-free interiors

Take note of the high-touch areas of your car: door handles, climate control buttons, seatbelts, and the steering wheel are all areas that you should pay extra attention. The steering wheel is especially important to clean, as a recent study found the average steering wheel to have four times the germs of public toilet seats.

You should also clean items in your car that your passengers may carry for entertainment. Cleaning stuffed animals and hard plastic toys will improve the safety of your children’s health.

Cleaners to use

While soap and water are a good first line of defense, more specialized cleaners will be more effective at keeping your car germ-free. CDC guidelines include a list of cleaners you can use — but read their labels to see whether you should use them on hard, non-porous surfaces or soft, porous surfaces.

When cleaning touchscreens, use an alcohol-based cleaner that is at least 70 percent alcohol.

Safety precautions

Wear a mask or cloth face covering to avoid breathing in germs or chemicals and wear disposable gloves. Wear a disposable gown or apron if you can or launder your clothes immediately after cleaning. Once you’ve finished, get rid of your disposable supplies and wash your hands!
