Tips for Traveling with Your Pet this Spring

Tips for Traveling with Your Pet

Going for a long drive can be a great way to refresh your mind, and it’s all the better if you can bring your best friend along. Whether you’re just wanting to get out for a bit or looking forward to a road trip in the summer or fall, these tips for traveling with your pet help ensure that your furry friend can come along safely.

Train your pet for long trips

If you have a long trip coming up, help your pet prepare by letting them adjust to time in the car. Start taking your pet on regular short car rides, gradually increasing the length so they can get used to sitting in their carrier.

Use a well-ventilated carrier

The safest option for traveling with a pet is to keep them secured in a crate or carrier. The carrier should have good ventilation and should be large enough so that your pet can comfortably stand, sit, and lie down. Be sure that the crate is tied down or secured so that it will not tumble if you have to brake suddenly.

Make a pet travel kit

For longer trips, it’s important that you have the resources to provide for your pet’s needs. Pack a kit that includes food, bottled water, and their dishes, plus a leash and plastic bags to pick up waste. It’s recommended that you stop every two hours to walk your pet, give them a chance to relieve themselves, and let them enjoy some water and food.

For overnight trips, add any medications your pet may need, as well as grooming supplies and one or two favorite toys.
